The latest Giant Screen film from National Geographic Entertainment, Flying Monsters 3D, explores the prehistoric pterosaurs that once ruled the Earth.  Narrated by veteran filmmaker, David Attenborough, the film feels like a very expensive PBS documentary, but nevertheless produces some brilliant images and a wonderfully immersive experience.

The film jumps straight into the world of pterosaurs, covering a variety of species.  Some of these flying monsters had a wingspan up to 45 feet.  On the Giant Screen, a viewer can get a sense of how truly gigantic these prehistoric creatures were.  Good CGI recreates these flying vertebrates, but more impressive are the CGI environments which feel both familiar and alien.  Lush tropical forest make up most of the scenery, and provide a uniquely realistic link between pterosaurs and their habitat.

The 3D translation needs work as some areas do have ghosting and double images.  Also, Flying Monsters would have benefitted from filming in 15/70 rather than digital, allowing for crisper and more vibrant images.  The narration from David Attenborough lends an experienced voice to the film with his career in natural history documentaries.  He is an engaging and likable host, and fits well within the Giant Screen genre.

A very educational film, the subject matter should hold the interest of students and anyone fascinated with the prehistoric world.  The film -- in its exploration of the pterosaurs via CGI animated sequences and the fossil record -- provides a very interesting and appealing jaunt into the world of prehistoric flying monsters.
