From the director of Bugs 3D (just about my favorite 3D film ever) comes Sea Monsters 3D. Don't let the title fool you, this is not a film about Loch Ness or Godzilla. Rather, these stars are real monsters that swam the seas back when dinosaurs roamed the land and beaches. "Dinosaurs of the Ocean" might have been a less ambiguous title.

The production enjoys a punchy pace, never staying on any one shot too long. And the filmmakers provide a structure that breaks up big chunks into more immediately meaningful littler ones. Basically, there are two parts, modern day scenes depicting paleontologists on location brushing dirt away from the bones of the creatures displayed in the other part -- under the ocean's surface during prehistoric times. Instead of rolling out the science and then the underwater special effects, the film wisely intertwines them. Motion CGI is very nice, though rendering could have used a bit more maturity.

The 3D is very strong with very few faults, camera movement sweeping and the story good, though not as rock solid as Bugs 3D. The only other minor blemish is that underwater sequences just barely begin to feel a bit repeated.

Overall, this is a fun, entertaining, educational family picture. But be forewarned, these sea monsters are every bit as ferocious as their dinosaur counterparts. They don't always play nice together.
