Apollo 13: The IMAX Experience

bigImage Ron Howard's hit 1995 film APOLLO 13 is being completely repurposed for 70mm IMAX exhibition -- the first time this has been done for a live-action 35mm feature film. (Animated 35mm classics such as "Beauty and the Beast" and "Fantasia/2000" have been reformatted for the 70mm screen already, using a process developed by Disney. However, APOLLO 13: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE is the first film to be re-done using IMAX Corporation's proprietary DMR® technology.)

(Scroll down for more on IMAX's new technology, and its implications, as well as an interview with IMAX Film Prez Greg Foster.)

A star-studded cast featuring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton and Ed Harris dramatizes the precarious 1971 mission of NASA's Apollo 13 shuttle using a combination of archival footage and special effects.
