December 18, 2007: I Am Legend Strong IMAX Opening
IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that I AM LEGEND opened strongly, with most shows sold out at IMAX® theatres during its debut weekend, contributing $3.2 million of the record-breaking $77.4 million that the film grossed at the domestic box office, from December 14 through Sunday, December 16. The picture opened on 77 domestic IMAX screens, posting a per screen average of $41,936. December 18, 2007: Cousteau/Mantello Bros. Join for Dolphins & Whales
Filmmakers and environmentalists Francois and Jean-Jacques Mantello and ocean explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau have announced they have joined forces on the new 3D documentary film DOLPHINS AND WHALES 3D: TRIBES OF THE OCEAN, which will be released at IMAX® Theatres beginning on February 15th, 2008. This latest installment in 3D Entertainment's unique ocean-themed film series will deliver a strong and compelling conservation message while bringing audiences on a close encounter, for the very first time in 3D, with small and giant cetaceans such as humpback and sperm whales, orcas, and dolphins. December 7, 2007: IMAX/AMC Sign 100-Theater Deal
IMAX Corporation and AMC Entertainment Inc. announced a joint-venture agreement to install 100 IMAX® digital projection systems at AMC locations in 33 major U.S. markets. The theatres will feature IMAX's digital projection system which is being developed for the IMAX MPX® theatre design. The agreement is projected to double IMAX's current commercial theatre footprint in North America and accelerates the momentum behind IMAX and AMC's transition to digital projection technology. The rollout of the first 50 IMAX digital projection systems will begin in July 2008 at premier AMC theatre locations in 24 of the 33 selected markets, with an additional 25 scheduled for rollout in 2009 and 25 more in 2010. November 27, 2007: Beowulf IMAX Posts Highest Grossing Second Weekend
IMAX Corporation today announced that BEOWULF: AN IMAX 3D EXPERIENCE grossed $2.95 million on 84 domestic IMAX screens during its second weekend, setting a new record for the highest grossing second weekend in IMAX history. IMAX® theatres contributed more than 17 percent of the weekend's overall domestic box office of $16.5 million on less than 2 percent of the screens, with a per screen average of $35,076. The ten-day domestic total for the IMAX® 3D release was $8.8 million, with a per screen average of $104,500. Further, 45 of the 50 top-performing domestic locations playing Beowulf were IMAX theatres. The worldwide IMAX total for Beowulf has reached $11.1 million. Read the Press Release >>

November 19, 2007: Beowulf IMAX Slays Audiences
IMAX Corporation today announced that BEOWULF: AN IMAX 3D EXPERIENCE contributed a record-setting $3.58 million of the $27.5 million that the film grossed at the domestic box office through its opening weekend. The IMAX® 3D release played on 84 domestic IMAX screens and registered 13 percent of the film's overall box office on less than two percent of the total screens. This performance marks the highest percentage box office contribution to a Hollywood film's total opening weekend performance in IMAX's history. November 14, 2007: IMAX/DreamWorks Animation 4-Picture Deal
IMAX Corporation and DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. today announced an agreement to release the studio's first three 3D motion pictures worldwide in IMAX® 3D. The IMAX 3D releases will include MONSTERS VS. ALIENS in March 2009, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON in November 2009 and SHREK GOES FORTH in May 2010. A fourth DreamWorks Animation title, KUNG FU PANDA, will be released in IMAX's 2D format in June 2008. The IMAX 3D titles are expected to be among the first presented with IMAX's digital 3D projection system, which is scheduled to be launched beginning June 2008. This is IMAX's first multiple 3D picture deal with a Hollywood studio. The 3D titles also will be simultaneously released to conventional digital 3D theatres. Paramount Pictures will be the exclusive distributor of the pictures. November 9, 2007: IMAX Report Q3 Financial Results
IMAX Corporation reported that it recorded a net loss per diluted share from continuing operations of ($0.19) for the third quarter of fiscal 2007, compared to a restated net loss from continuing operations of ($0.12) per diluted share for the third quarter of fiscal 2006. The Company signed agreements for 18 IMAX® theatre systems in the third quarter of fiscal 2007, compared to five in the third quarter of last year.

Highlights:

  • Company prepares for launch of digital projection system in second quarter of fiscal 2008, and believes the digital rollout will mark the beginning of the end of its financial transition period.
  • Company announces 18 signings in the third quarter, including ten for digital theaters, equal to the number signed in the first half of fiscal 2007.

November 1, 2007: Spiderwick to be Released in IMAX
IMAX Corporation and Paramount Pictures announced that THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES, a fantasy adventure based on the best-selling series of books, will be simultaneously released to both IMAX® and conventional theatres on February 15th, 2008. Directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls, Freaky Friday), produced by Mark Canton (300) from a screenplay by Karey Kirkpatrick and David Berenbaum and John Sayles, The Spiderwick Chronicles will be digitally re-mastered into The IMAX Experience® through IMAX's DMR® (Digital Re-Mastering) technology. October 29, 2007: Nat Geo to Release U2 3D
National Geographic Cinema Ventures (NGCV) President Lisa Truitt announced today the first major international NGCV release, U2 3D, opening in late January 2008 in 3-D only, in REAL D, IMAX 3-D and other digital 3-D theaters worldwide. Filmed in South America during U2's Vertigo Tour, U2 3D is the first live-action movie ever shot, produced and exhibited in digital 3-D. October 22, 2007: IMAX Signs Theatre Deal in Morocco
IMAX Corporation announced an agreement with Al Amine Investissement, a leading commercial retail developer in Morocco, to install an IMAX® theatre in the city of Casablanca. Scheduled for installation in early 2009, the IMAX theatre will be an anchor attraction at the new Morocco Mall, which is expected to be the largest mall in the country. The announcement marks IMAX's first contract in Morocco. Under the terms of the agreement, the developer is contracted to install an IMAX MPX® theatre system, and both parties have agreed to install IMAX's new digital theatre system instead if it becomes available on or before the installation date. October 17, 2007: IMAX Target Launch Date for Digital Projection
IMAX Corporation announced that it has moved up the launch date of its digital projection system in development to the second quarter of 2008 from its previously announced timeframe of the end of 2008 to mid 2009. Under the current roll-out schedule, the Company anticipates that three digital IMAX prototypes will be installed during the second quarter of 2008. Shortly thereafter, IMAX expects to install three additional prototypes. Once these prototypes meet performance specifications, IMAX expects to proceed with a full rollout during the second half of the third quarter and in the fourth quarter of 2008. October 16, 2007: Living Sea Inducted Into IMAX Hall of Fame
MacGillivray Freeman Films' classic ocean film THE LIVING SEA was inducted into the IMAX Hall of Fame at this year's annual Giant Screen Cinema Association conference in Vancouver on September 22. The award caps twelve years of outstanding critical acclaim and record-breaking box office performance for The Living Sea, which was nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Documentary Short Subject in 1995. October 16, 2007: IMAX/Goodrich Sign 2-Theater Deal
IMAX Corporation and Goodrich Quality Theaters, Inc. announced an agreement to install two IMAX® theatres in new multiplexes planned for construction in 2008 and 2009. Under the terms of the agreement, Goodrich Quality Theaters will install an IMAX MPX® theatre in the new Hamilton 16 IMAX in a Simon Properties Mall on the far eastside of Indianapolis in March 2008. In the fourth quarter of 2009, in a yet to be announced location in Michigan, Goodrich will install IMAX's new digital projection system, which is in the advanced stages of development. Both systems are capable of showing Hollywood movies that have been digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience in both IMAX and IMAX® 3D, as well as original IMAX documentaries. October 15, 2007: Three IMAX Theaters Choose MediaMerge
MediaMerge, the largest third-party IMAX servicing agent in the world, has added a new theater to its lineup, and two other clients have renewed their contracts. The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center has chosen MediaMerge as its IMAX Service Partner for its 3D theater. Meanwhile, the Franklin Institute, which has entrusted the care of its Tuttleman IMAX Theater to MediaMerge since the company began servicing IMAX theaters in 2002, has renewed its contract. October 11, 2007: Catalyst Withdraws Lawsuit Against IMAX
IMAX Corporation reported that Catalyst Fund Limited Partnership II has withdrawn the lawsuit it filed against IMAX in the New York State Supreme Court. Catalyst was seeking to invalidate the consents the Company successfully received from a majority of its bondholders on April 16, 2007 extending the deadline to file the Company's annual and other reports and waiving any existing defaults arising from a failure to comply with the reporting covenant under the indenture governing the Company's senior notes. IMAX viewed the suit as entirely without merit and immediately moved to dismiss the complaint when it was filed on May 10, 2007. Catalyst then asked the Court for permission to withdraw the suit, which was granted on October 9, 2007. Read the Press Release >>

October 4, 2007: MFF Wins Six GSCA Awards
MacGillivray Freeman Films was honored with six GSCA Achievement Awards at this year's annual Giant Screen Cinema Association conference in Vancouver, winning in all production categories for which it was eligible. HURRICANE ON THE BAYOU received three awards -- Best Film of the Year, Best Sound, Best Film for Lifelong Learning -- and THE ALPS received the Best Cinematography Award. A Special Achievement in Filmmaking Award was also presented to Ron Goodman, the founder of Spacecam and The Alps director of aerial photography, for his groundbreaking aerial cinematography in the Swiss Alps. The GSCA Achievement Awards are voted on by the 280 members of the Giant Screen Cinema Association representing the more than 400 giant screen theatres worldwide and the Marketing Awards are voted on by a panel of judges who are also members. October 2, 2007: IMAX/Regal Sign 5-Theater Deal
IMAX Corporation and Regal Cinemas, Inc. announced a joint venture agreement for five IMAX® theatre systems. The deal includes the first North American order for IMAX's digital projection technology, which is currently in the advanced stages of development. Two IMAX MPX® theatres will be operating before the end of 2007 in Knoxville, TN and Las Vegas, NV. The remaining three theatres are to utilize IMAX's digital projection technology, and are expected to be installed during the fourth quarter of 2008 and second quarter of 2009 in Seattle, WA and two other locations in the western United States. October 1, 2007: Sea Monsters Simultaneous Large Format/Real D Release
SEA MONSTERS: A PREHISTORIC ADVENTURE will be the first large-format 3-D film to release simultaneously on both giant screen and REAL D digital 3-D screens nationwide, it was announced by National Geographic. Already setting records as the biggest release for a film of this genre, the film will open worldwide this month on more than 190 REAL D screens and 75 giant screens. September 24, 2007: IMAX/Warner Bros. Next IMAX 3D Space Film
IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros Pictures announced that, in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the IMAX® 3D camera will return to space for production of the next IMAX 3D space film. Set for release in early 2010, the film will chronicle the life story of the Hubble Space telescope -- deemed the most important scientific instrument since Galileo invented the original telescope. The Hubble IMAX 3D film will be made by the same filmmaking team behind SPACE STATION 3D. The film will chronicle the amazing saga of the greatest success in space since the Moon Landing. September 21, 2007: Sea Monsters Oct. 20 UK Opening
National Geographic's new giant-screen film SEA MONSTERS: A PREHISTORIC ADVENTURE, is the first release to premiere simultaneously across all UK IMAX® cinemas and selected specialty theatres on 20 October 2007. The film brings to life the extraordinary marine reptiles of the dinosaur age in spectacular photo-realistic 3D. September 19, 2007: IMAX Signs Ten Theatre China Deal
IMAX Corporation and Wanda Cinema Line Corporation today announced an agreement to install ten IMAX® theatres in The People's Republic of China, with the first two installations scheduled for December of this year. The agreement marks IMAX's largest ever multiple-theatre deal in Asia. Under the terms of the sales agreement, all of the theatres are to be installed either with IMAX's MPX® theatre system or the Company's new digital projection technology, which is currently in the advanced stages of development. All ten IMAX theatres are scheduled to be installed as part of new multiplex constructions. September 14, 2007: Mantello Bros. To Present Daryl Hannah Reef Check Award
3D Entertainment chairman, Francois Mantello, and Jean-Jacques Mantello, the director of the Company's unique ocean conservation-themed film trilogy for IMAX® 3D theatres, will present the Reef Rescuer Award to Hollywood star and environmentalist Daryl Hannah for her dedicated support and advocacy of reef and ocean conservation at Reef Check's 5th annual Reef Rescue gala on Sunday, September 16th. September 6, 2007: Harry Potter 5 in IMAX Sets New Record
HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, which has grossed more than $906 million worldwide to date, continues to break IMAX box office records through its 7th week. The IMAX® 3D release, which has shattered multiple IMAX box office records, has now earned more than $24 million on 91 IMAX screens domestically and more than $11 million on 52 IMAX screens internationally. September 5, 2007: Deep Sea Grosses $50M
The highly acclaimed IMAX hit motion picture adventure DEEP SEA 3D continued its box office climb, surpassing $50 million in total gross box office receipts since it premiered in March 2006. After 75 weeks in release, Deep Sea 3D has played in more than 120 IMAX® theatres worldwide. August 29, 2007: Dolphins & Whales Principal Photog Complete
3D Entertainment Ltd. announced the successful completion of principal photography on its upcoming feature, DOLPHINS & WHALES 3D: TRIBES OF THE OCEAN. This new breathtaking documentary will make its US debut on IMAX 3D screens in February 2008 before expanding into Europe and will be released in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and its North American office, RONA, based in Washington D.C. Dolphins & Whales 3D is currently in post-production and will be completed by late November. IMAX Corporation reported that it recorded a net loss per diluted share from continuing operations of ($0.11) for the second quarter of fiscal 2007, compared to net earnings of $0.04 per diluted share from continuing operations for the second quarter of fiscal 2006. August 6, 2007: Alps Nominated at Jackson Hole Film Fest
MacGillivray Freeman Films' original giant screen production THE ALPS was nominated as one of three finalists to compete for the Best Theatrical Program Award at the prestigious 2007 Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival. Winners will be announced October 4 at the festival's Awards Ceremony in Jackson Hole. The nomination follows a string of nominations received by The Alps for the Giant Screen Cinema Association Achievement Awards announced in June in the categories for Best Film Award, Best Cinematography Award, and the Best Soundtrack Award. July 25, 2007: IMAX Signs China Theater Deal
IMAX Corporation announced an agreement with the Nanjing Deji Plaza Co., Ltd. to install an IMAX® theatre in the recently opened Deji Plaza Mall, the largest mall in the city of Nanjing. The IMAX theatre will be part of the project's second phase of development, which will include the largest multiplex in the Jiangsu province. The new theatre is scheduled to open in mid 2010. July 24, 2007: Harry Potter 5 Second Week Box Office Records
HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX continued its box office reign, posting a record-breaking second weekend at IMAX® theatres throughout the world. After shattering virtually every opening box office record at IMAX® theatres during its debut, the digitally re-mastered IMAX release grossed $2.8 million on 91 domestic IMAX screens -- with 58 of the 91 domestic IMAX theatres reporting opening week box office records - and $1.18 million on 40 international screens, from Friday, July 20 through Sunday, July 22. July 11, 2007: Harry Potter 5 to Open in Record Number IMAX Theaters
Warner Bros.
