June 29, 2007: Beowulf to Be Released in IMAX 3D
BEOWULF, the latest film from Academy Award winning director Robert Zemeckis, the filmmaker behind such box office successes as Forrest Gump, The Polar Express, the Back To The Future series and What Lies Beneath, will be released domestically in IMAX® 3D simultaneously with the motion picture's premiere in conventional theatres on November 16, 2007. The film will be released internationally within three weeks of the domestic launch. Beowulf will be digitally converted into IMAX 3D and re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® through IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. Inspired by the 9th century English epic poem, Beowulf combines a digitally enhanced live-action filmmaking technology with an all-star cast that includes Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich, Robin Wright Penn, Brendan Gleeson, Crispin Glover, Alison Lohman and Angelina Jolie. June 14, 2007: Hurricane, Alps Receive 7 GSCA Nods
HURRICANE ON THE BAYOU and THE ALPS have received a combined seven nominations for this year's annual GSCA Film Achievement Awards, the most nominations ever received by a distributor in a single year. Hurricane on the Bayou was nominated for four awards: Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Film for Lifelong Learning. June 13, 2007: GSCA Announces Finalists for Film Awards
The Giant Screen Cinema Association announced the finalists in their annual film awards. Hurricane on the Bayou, Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs, and The Alps were nominated for Best Film Produced Exclusively for Giant Screen Theaters and Best Cinematography. June 5, 2007: Spider-Man 3 IMAX Grosses $20M
Columbia Pictures' SPIDER-MAN 3: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE has grossed more than $20 million worldwide since premiering on May 3, 2007. The picture continued its heroic box office performance by reaching the $20 million milestone faster than any other 2D digitally re-mastered IMAX release, between its opening on May 3 and June 3, 2007. Spider-Man 3 is currently playing on 84 domestic IMAX® screens and 34 international IMAX screens, the largest opening in IMAX's 40-year history. The film's overall worldwide box office total is now more than $844 million, making Spider-Man 3 the highest grossing film in the Spider-Man franchise and the highest grossing movie in Sony Pictures' history. May 29, 2007: Dark Knight Scenes to Be Filmed in IMAX
Director Christopher Nolan is filming four sequences in the next installment of Warner Bros. Pictures' Batman franchise, THE DARK KNIGHT, with extremely high resolution IMAX® cameras using the giant 15/70 film format. This marks the first time ever that a major feature film has been even partially shot using IMAX cameras, marking a revolutionary integration of the two film formats. The first of the scenes, including a prologue that introduces Batman's arch-nemesis The Joker, was shot in April, several weeks in advance of the actual start of principal photography. May 24, 2007: World Record for Return to Everest Doctors
The Caudwell Xtreme Everest team of doctors featured in MacGillivray Freeman's upcoming IMAX Theatre film RETURN TO EVEREST, has summitted Everest from the South, via the South East Ridge. Led by Dr. Mike Grocott from Britain, the summit team included Return to Everest co-director and director of mountain photography, Michael Brown, who filmed the ascent. The scientists and doctors are investigating hypoxia -- a deficiency of oxygen in the blood -- to help future patients in intensive care. They set a world record by taking arterial blood samples near the summit of the world's highest mountain. The samples were taken on the Balcony at 27,600 feet rather than the summit for safety reasons, due to low temperatures and high winds. Return to Everest is slated for release on March 4, 2009. May 22, 2007: Hurricane on the Bayou Wins Accolade Award
HURRICANE ON THE BAYOU is the winner of an Accolade Award for Excellence in the 2007 Accolade Competition. The Accolade Award recognizes film, television and video productions that demonstrate exceptional achievement in craft and creativity, and that contributes to profound social change. May 7, 2007: Spider-Man 3 IMAX shatters B.O. Records
SPIDER-MAN 3 shattered multiple box office records at IMAX® theatres through its opening weekend, contributing a record-setting $4.8 million of the $148 million that the film grossed at the domestic box office, from May 4, through Sunday, May 6. The picture also broke the record for IMAX's largest single day worldwide total at $2.2 million and posted a remarkable domestic opening weekend per screen average of $57,147. Spider-Man 3 opened on 84 domestic IMAX screens and 34 international IMAX screens, making it the largest opening in IMAX's 40-year history, with a record-breaking worldwide estimated total of $6.3 million. April 26, 2007: IMAX/Star Cinema Expand Relationship
IMAX Corporation and Wisconsin-based Star Cinema announced an agreement to open an IMAX® theatre in Star Cinema's multiplex located in Council Bluffs, Iowa, a suburb of Omaha, Nebraska, complimenting the current 16-screen movie theatre. The IMAX theatre will be the second for Star Cinema, following a successful launch of the exhibitor's first IMAX theatre in Fitchburg/Madison, Wisconsin. The agreement is subject to the exhibitor obtaining local building permits and approvals, and the theatre is scheduled to be open in early 2008. The new theatre will utilize IMAX MPX® technology and will be capable of playing Hollywood event films that have been digitally re-mastered into The IMAX Experience®, as well as original IMAX productions in 2D and IMAX® 3D. April 26, 2007: Everest Sets Giant Screen Benchmark
EVEREST, MacGillivray Freeman Films' blockbuster about the world's most famous mountain, has now appeared to the general public in more than 250 different giant screen theatres since its 1998 release.  Many theatres have exhibited the film in multiple engagements leading to nearly 400 signed license agreements plus more than 150 license extensions.  Industry records indicate that Everest has played in more theatres than any other film in giant screen film history. April 25, 2007: Michael Douglas Narrates Dinosaurs Alive
Academy Award® winning actor-producer Michael Douglas has signed on to narrate DINOSAURS ALIVE -- a new film that brings dinosaurs to life in 2D and 3D on the giant screen. The film travels from Mongolia to the high desert badlands of New Mexico, where some of the richest repositories of dinosaur fossils have been found and where amazing new discoveries continue to be made. Dinosaurs Alive is written and directed by two veteran filmmakers, Academy Award nominated Bayley Silleck and Emmy® Award winning David Clark, with cinematography by Bill Reeve. April 24, 2007: IMAX/Warner Bros. Dive Into Third IMAX 3D Film
Warner Bros. Pictures Inc. and IMAX Corporation will embark on a third original IMAX® 3D co-production for release to IMAX® theatres in 2009. With the working title DEEP SEA-QUEL, the IMAX 3D picture will be made by the same team behind the highly successful co-production of Deep Sea 3D. The new IMAX 3D adventure will transport moviegoers to some of the most exotic and isolated under sea locations on earth, including Southern Australia, New Guinea and others in the Indo-Pacific region and allow them to experience face-to-face encounters with some of the most mysterious and stunning creatures of the sea.

April 19, 2007: Harry Potter 5 to Feature IMAX 3D Finale
Select scenes of the IMAX DMR® version of HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX will be digitally converted into An IMAX 3D Experience®. IMAX Corporation plans to use its proprietary 2D to 3D conversion technology to transform approximately 20 minutes at the end of the film -- which is being digitally re-mastered into the The IMAX Experience® using IMAX DMR (Digital Re-Mastering) technology -- into IMAX® 3D. April 17, 2007: 300 Grosses $20M
IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures announced that 300: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE has grossed more than $20 million worldwide since premiering on March 9, 2007. The picture continues to blaze a record-breaking box office trail by reaching the $20 million milestone in just over four weeks, between March 9, 2007 and April 10, 2007 -- faster than any other 2D digitally re-mastered IMAX release. 300 is currently playing on 84 IMAX® screens worldwide and is showing strong box office performances in both domestic and international markets. April 17, 2007: IMAX/Muvico 3-Theatre Joint Venture
IMAX Corporation and Muvico Theaters, Inc. announced a joint venture agreement for the installation of three IMAX® theatre systems at multiplexes in Florida and New Jersey. The first IMAX theatre is expected to open at the Baywalk 20 in St. Petersburg, Florida, in time for the May 4th release of Spider-Man 3. The second system will be installed at the Parisian 20 multiplex in West Palm Beach, Florida and is expected to open in time for the July 13 release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The third IMAX theatre is scheduled to be installed in 2008 as part of a new multiplex in the highly-anticipated Xanadu complex in East Rutherford, NJ. The new IMAX theatres will be capable of playing Hollywood event films that have been digitally re-mastered into IMAX's format, as well as original IMAX productions in 2D and IMAX® 3D. April 9, 2007: MFF Returns to Everest
MacGillivray Freeman Films announced the production of the 3D giant screen adventure RETURN TO EVEREST 3D, a follow-up to the company's giant screen blockbuster Everest. The production marks the first time the world's tallest mountain will be filmed in IMAX 3D. Starring in the production are two of the original stars of Everest, Jamling Norgay of Nepal and Spanish climber Araceli Segarra. Return to Everest 3D is directed by two-time Academy Award® nominee Greg MacGillivray (The Living Sea, Dolphins) and produced by MacGillivray and his son Shaun MacGillivray. April 5, 2007: IMAX Names New CFO
IMAX Corporation announced its appointment of Joseph Sparacio to the position of Executive Vice President of Finance. Mr. Sparacio is expected to assume the duties of Chief Financial Officer in May and will be based in the Company's New York office where he will report to IMAX co-Chairmen and co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. Edward MacNeil, who currently serves as the Company's Interim Chief Financial Officer, will continue in a senior financial role based in the Company's Toronto office. April 4, 2007: IMAX/Dickinson Sign Sixth Theatre Deal
IMAX Corporation and Kansas-based Dickinson Theatres Inc. today announced an agreement to install an IMAX® theatre as part of a new multiplex scheduled to open in Oklahoma City, OK in early 2009. The agreement marks the sixth IMAX theatre commitment from the exhibitor, following an announcement made earlier this month in which it will install five IMAX systems. All of the theatres will be installed into multiplexes throughout the Midwest. April 3, 2007: Dinosaurs 3D Launches April 5th
DINOSAURS: GIANTS OF PATAGONIA 3D is set to launch April 5th and includes 20 minutes of computer generated images and features narration by Donald Sutherland. The film has been receiving rave reviews from those in attendance at the test screenings. It will be screened in 15/70 3D at this years GSCA in Los Angeles at the end of April, plus the Euromax convention in early May in London, England. Read the Press Release >>

March 21, 2007: IMAX Signs China Theatre Deal
IMAX Corporation announced an agreement with the Daqing Science and Technology Association to install an IMAX® theatre in the Daqing Science and Technology Museum, located outside of Harbin, the capital city of Heilongjiang Province, in North-East China. March 20, 2007: 300 IMAX Record-Breaking Second Weekend
300 continued its box office reign, posting a record-breaking second weekend at IMAX® theatres. After already registering the highest opening weekend in IMAX's history, the digitally re-mastered IMAX release grossed $2.7 million from 62 domestic IMAX screens, from Friday, March 16 through Sunday, March 18. The film's worldwide IMAX total has climbed to $9.1 million, contributing to the overall box office of $154.2 million through the weekend. Read the Press Release >>

March 13, 2007: 300 Storms Into IMAX
300: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE contributed a record-setting $3.6 million of the $70,855,301 that the film grossed at the domestic box office opening weekend. 300: The IMAX Experience played in 62 domestic IMAX® theaters, while 300 played in 3103 locations across the country.

Highlights include:

  • Largest domestic three-day total at $3.6 million
  • Largest opening day gross for any IMAX movie at $1,355,000
  • Largest opening day per screen average at $21,850
  • Largest opening weekend per screen average of $58,000

March 12, 2007: IMAX/Dickinson 5-Theatre Deal
IMAX Corporation and Kansas-based Dickinson Theatres Inc. announced an agreement to open five IMAX® theatres in new multiplexes throughout the Midwest. Dickinson Theatres will open its IMAX theatres in Mesa, Arizona; Little Rock, Arkansas; Springfield, Missouri; and Wichita, Kansas; with the fifth location to be determined. The first theatre is scheduled to be installed in 2007, with the next three in 2008 and the fifth to be installed in 2009. March 12, 2007: IMAX/Regal Cinemas Joint Venture
IMAX Corporation and Regal Cinemas, Inc. announced a joint venture agreement for the installation of two IMAX MPX® theatre systems at top-performing multiplexes in California and Oregon in the next two months. Separately, Regal agreed to install an IMAX theatre at its newly redeveloped Pointe Complex in Orlando, Florida. IMAX MPX theatre systems will be installed at the Edwards Mira Mesa Stadium 18 in San Diego, California and the Regal Cinemas Bridgeport 18 in Portland, Oregon. Both theatres are scheduled to open in time for the May 4 launch of SPIDER-MAN 3: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE. February 23, 2007: Hurricane Wins La Géode Youth Prize
MacGillivray Freeman's giant screen film HURRICANE ON THE BAYOU was awarded the Youth Prize on February 4 at the 12th annual La Géode Film Festival in Paris. One of five large format films entered in the festival, Hurricane on the Bayou was voted to receive the prize by the festival's participating middle school students. Produced by MacGillivray Freeman Films Educational Foundation, Hurricane on the Bayou was released on December 22, 2006 and is now playing or coming soon to more than 70 giant screen theatres. February 23, 2007: Capelle Joins K2 Full Time

Holiday blockbuster NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE has grossed more than $15 million worldwide since premiering on December 22, 2006. The IMAX release continues to show strong legs by registering a box office increase of 1% for its seventh weekend, from 73 domestic IMAX screens. The motion picture is also playing at 20 international IMAX locations with more scheduled to open this week. February 11, 2007: Roving Mars Receives VES Award
ROVING MARS received the award for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Special Venue Project at the fifth annual Visual Effects Society Awards held this past Sunday. The award was given to Alan Markowitz, Dan Maas, Jeremy Nicolaides, and Johnathan Banta for their work on the film. This year's VES Awards garnered the best attendance for these events so far, and attracted more than eight hundred celebrities, visual effects and animation artists, dozens of nominees and members of the film, television and games industries. February 9, 2007: At-Bristol IMAX to Close
At-Bristol announced its IMAX Theatre and Wildwalk will cease to operate from April 2007. The science center proposed to focus primarly on providing interactive exhibitions and programs. February 7, 2007: IMAX Signs 2 Theatre China Deal
IMAX Corporation and the China Science and Technology Museum announced an agreement to install two IMAX® theatres as part of the new world-class museum to be built in Beijing in 2008. The China Science and Technology Museum is already under construction and will be the final addition to the Beijing Olympic Park. The museum will house two different types of IMAX theatres. One will feature IMAX® Dome technology, which wraps a giant 180 degree IMAX Dome screen around the audience. The other will feature IMAX 3D, which has a slightly curved screen and IMAX's powerful dual lens 3D projector. Both theatres are expected to be installed by the end of 2008 or early 2009. February 7, 2007: MediaMerge to Support MD Science Center
MediaMerge has added an 11th IMAX theater to its technical support roster. The Maryland Science Center in Baltimore signed MediaMerge as its IMAX Service Provider recently, activating a multi-year support program for the museum's St. John Properties 3D IMAX theater. Read the Press Release >>

January 25, 2007: Mystery of the Nile Premieres in Ethiopia
MYSTERY OF THE NILE, the highest-grossing giant screen film of 2005, was released on January 7 at the historic Ethiopian National Theatre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The opening event, held on Ehtiopia's Christmas Day, was attended by more than 600 guests, including the most important authorities of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopía, representatives of more than a dozen embassies, academic authorities and businessmen. A special 35mm version of the film dubbed in Amharic was produced for the exhibition. Read the Press Release >>

January 25, 2007: 300 To Be Released in IMAX
The highly anticipated film 300, a Mark Canton/Gianni Nunnari Production directed by Zack Snyder and based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, will be simultaneously released domestically to both IMAX® and conventional theatres on March 9, 2007. The film will be digitally re-mastered into The IMAX Experience® and Warner Bros. Pictures will be the exclusive distributor of the film. Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fought to death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. January 18, 2007: Deep Sea 3D Grosses $30M
The highly acclaimed IMAX hit motion picture adventure DEEP SEA 3D has reached another box office milestone, surpassing $30 million in total gross box office receipts since it premiered last March. Deep Sea 3D is Warner Bros. Pictures' second original IMAX 3D production, following the successful release of NASCAR 3D: The IMAX Experience, which has now grossed more than $23 million worldwide. January 11, 2007: IMAX New Hampshire 2-Theater Deal
IMAX Corporation and Zyacorp Entertainment's Cinemagic announced an agreement to install two IMAX theatres as part of new multiplexes. Zyacorp Entertainment's first IMAX theatre is scheduled to open in Hooksett, New Hampshire, in 2007. A second location in Southern Maine is expected to install in 2008. January 10, 2007: IMAX/Kerasotes Sign Theater Deal
IMAX Corporation and Kerasotes ShowPlace Theatres, North America's sixth largest exhibitor, announced an agreement to install an IMAX® theatre in the exhibitor's flagship location, the ShowPlace 16 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Expected to open in 2007, the new IMAX theatre will utilize IMAX MPX® technology, and will be capable of playing Hollywood event films that have been digitally re-mastered into The IMAX Experience, as well as original IMAX productions in 2D and IMAX® 3D. January 3, 2007: Night at the Museum IMAX Strong 2nd Weekend
The holiday blockbuster NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM posted another strong performance in IMAX® theatres through its second weekend. For the four-day New Year's holiday weekend (Friday, December 29 through Monday January 1, 2007), the digitally re-mastered IMAX release grossed $2.5 million at 72 domestic IMAX theatres -- an 11% increase over the Christmas holiday weekend. The film also performed well in its initial international engagements, grossing an estimated $600,000 from 12 locations.
