December 21, 2005: Depp, Winslet Dive into Deep Sea 3D
IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures announced that their upcoming original IMAX® 3D production, DEEP SEA 3D, will be co-narrated by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, and will feature an original score from award-winning composer Danny Elfman. The film will be the first documentary ever to boast the voices of Depp or Winslet, and be the first original IMAX production to be scored by Elfman, who has provided the musical backdrop for many major Hollywood productions. The film, shot by Director/Cinematographer Howard Hall and produced by Toni Myers, is slated for a March 3, 2006 release exclusively on IMAX® theaters. Click here to read the press release.
December 19, 2005: IMAX Signs 3-Theater Deal in South America
IMAX Corporation announced an agreement with RACIMEC International Group, a leading entertainment developer in South America, to install three IMAX theatre systems into new entertainment retail developments in Chile and Venezuela. Two IMAX theatres are scheduled to open in Santiago, Chile, with one to open in Caracas, Venezuela. The new IMAX theatres in Chile are expected to open in the second quarters of 2007 and 2008. November 22, 2005: Harry Potter 4 Shatters IMAX Records
HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE opened to sellout crowds and shattered every record for an IMAX Hollywood simultaneous release. In its debut at 66 North American IMAX® theatres, the film posted the biggest three-day opening ever, beating the previous record by more than 30%, with an estimated $2.93 million in grosses over the three-day period from Friday, November 18 to Sunday, November 20, for a per-screen average of more than $44,000. The film set the record for the highest per-screen average, highest opening day at $1.06 million, and also set single-day box office records for Friday, Saturday and Sunday for an IMAX digitally re-mastered release. November 3, 2005: Poseidon Comes to IMAX Screens
IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures announced that POSEIDON, a re-envisioning of the 1972 adventure classic The Poseidon Adventure, will be simultaneously released domestically to both IMAX® and conventional theatres on May 12, 2006. Poseidon is directed by Wolfgang Petersen (The Perfect Storm, Troy) and tells an epic tale about a luxury ocean liner that capsizes from a colossal tidal wave, leaving its survivors to fend for themselves as they find a way out. November 3, 2005: Superman Flys to IMAX
IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures announced that SUPERMAN RETURNS will be simultaneously released to both IMAX® and conventional theatres on June 30, 2006. The 35mm version of the film will be digitally remastered for the Large Format screen using IMAX's DMR technology. The story follows the Man of Steel as he returns to Earth after a mysterious absence of several years. The film stars Brandon Rough as Clark Kent/Superman, Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor and Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane with Bryan Singer (X-Men, The Usual Suspects) at the helm. November 1, 2005: IMAX Signs 3-Theater Israel Deal
IMAX Corporation announced an agreement with SKS Holdings, a subsidiary of Epic Entertainment, to install three IMAX® theatre systems at multiplexes throughout Israel. A total of twelve IMAX theatres are now slated to be open by 2008. Epic Entertainment's IMAX theatres are scheduled to open in major urban cities across Israel with the specific locations to be announced. Click here to read the press release.
October 31, 2005: GSTA 2005 Award Winners
The Giant Screen Theater Association wrapped up its annual International Conference and Trade Show with an awards gala, paying tribute to the filmmakers and marketers in the industry. Best Film went to FORCES OF NATURE as well as Best Film for Learning and Best Film Launch by a Theater. MacGillivray Freeman Films' MYSTERY OF THE NILE was the other big winner taking home awards in Best Soundtrack, Best Cinematography, Special Achievement in Film and Best Distributors Marketing Campaign. October 20, 2005: IMAX Signs Deal for First IMAX® Theatre in Brazil
IMAX Corporation announced an agreement with Tacla Shopping, a leading Brazilian retail developer, to install an IMAX MPX® theatre system in what is expected to be the largest mall in South Brazil. The Palladium Shopping Center, to be located in the city of Curitiba will feature approximately 356 stores, a 10-theatre multiplex including IMAX, 8 restaurants and a food court with 23 stations. October 12, 2005: IMAX to Open Theater in Ufa, Russia
IMAX Corporation announced an agreement with ZAO Kompaniya Perspektiva, the largest exhibitor in Ufa, Russia, to install an IMAX MPX® theatre system as part of an expansion to the exhibitor's flagship multiplex. October 10, 2005: nWave Begins Prod'n on Fly Me to the Moon
nWave Pictures has begun production on FLY ME TO THE MOON, the first computer-animated feature film to be conceived, designed and created in 3D. Directed by nWave founder Ben Stassen and produced by company president Charlotte Huggins, the film centers on three tween-aged flies who buck the conventional wisdom that "dreamers get swatted" and stow aboard the Apollo 11 flight to the moon. October 6, 2005: MFF Films Mountaineer Harlin's Eiger Ascent
John Harlin III reached the summit of the Eiger North Face as a team of filmmakers from MacGillivray Freeman Films captures his ascent for the upcoming giant screen film THE ALPS: GIANTS OF NATURE. Forty years after the mountain claimed the life of his mountaineering father, Harlin III successfully reached its summit along with renowned European climbers Robert and Daniela Jasper. The team summited on September 24 after a climb that lasted three days, with two nights spent bivouacked on narrow ledges high on the sheer face of the mountain. October 3, 2005: Happy Feet to See IMAX 3D Release in 2006
IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures announced that HAPPY FEET, an animated musical comedy about a tap-dancing Emperor Penguin and his adventures in the Antarctic, will be released domestically in IMAX® 3D simultaneous with the film's 2D premiere in conventional theatres on November 17, 2006. The film is directed by George Miller (the Babe films, Lorenzo's Oil and the Mad Max trilogy) with an all-star ensemble cast, featuring the voices of Nicole Kidman, Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Hugh Jackman and Brittany Murphy. HAPPY FEET will be digitally converted into IMAX 3D and utilize proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. Warner Bros. September 28, 2005: GSTA Awards Mystery of the Nile
Producer/Director Jordi Llompart and Producer Greg MacGillivray were awarded the GSTA Special Achievement Award for their film MYSTERY OF THE NILE at the Giant Screen Theater Association's 10th annual GSTA Achievement Awards ceremony. The film also took home Best Cinematography and Best Soundtrack awards. MacGillivray Freeman Films Distribution Company received the MAC Award for Best Marketing by a Distributor. September 20, 2005: IMAX to Develop Surfari in 3D
IMAX Corporation announced it is in active development of SURFARI, the first ever IMAX® 3D film to profile the thrilling and globally popular sport of surfing. The adrenaline-pumping IMAX 3D feature will showcase top surfing talent and examine the worldwide phenomena through the prism of global surf travel and exploration. IMAX will serve as executive producer of Surfari, which is scheduled for release in 2007. Surfari is written by Sam George, long time editor of Surfer magazine and an accomplished surfing author and filmmaker. He will co-produce with Paul Taublieb, chief consultant to ESPN on the creation of the X Games, as well a writer and producer of action sports programming for ABC, ESPN, NASCAR, NBC and Fox Sports Net. September 15, 2005: IMAX and GE Announce Relationship
IMAX Corporation today announced an agreement with GE Commercial Finance to provide flexible commercial leasing solutions to exhibitors interested in entering the IMAX business. GE Commercial Finance will offer qualified prospective IMAX clients in North America and select international markets an expanded suite of financing options, potentially reducing the start up costs associated with opening a new IMAX® theatre. The relationship with GE will enable IMAX to better serve its clients, and is expected to help accelerate expansion of the commercial IMAX theatre network. Click here to read the press release.
September 6, 2005: IMAX, Cinemex Sign Theater Deal
IMAX Corporation and Cinemex, the largest movie theatre chain in Mexico City and the second largest in the country, announced an agreement to install an IMAX MPX® theatre system at a Cinemex multiplex in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The new IMAX theatre is scheduled to open in October as part of the Cinemex Diana multiplex in the city of Cuernavaca, located approximately one hour from Mexico City. August 31, 2005: IMAX Signs Texas Theater Deal
IMAX Corporation announced an agreement with Texas-based commercial real estate developer TriMark Realty Investments to open an IMAX® theatre in Colleyville, TX. The theatre will be the cornerstone of a new high-end cinema complex TriMark is developing and part of a 110,000 square foot expansion of the Town Center Colleyville retail hub. The IMAX theatre in Metro Cinema Colleyville is expected to open in May 2006 and be part of a luxury entertainment complex outfitted with an upscale restaurant and bar. August 30, 2005: All-Star Cast Voices Magnificent Desolation
Presented and narrated by Tom Hanks, IMAX Corporation's MAGNIFICENT DESOLATION: WALKING ON THE MOON 3D will feature an all-star voice cast of top Hollywood talents. Those featured in the film include Paul Newman, Matt Damon, Matthew McConaughey, Morgan Freeman, John Travolta, Gary Sinise and Bill Paxton. August 11, 2005: IMAX Signs Utah Theater Deal
IMAX Corporation and the LHM Group announced an agreement to open an IMAX® theatre at the Jordan Commons Megaplex in Salt Lake City, Utah. The 17-screen Megaplex is the highest grossing site in the state and is one of three successful theatres LHM operates in Utah. The existing Cricket Super Screen 70mm auditorium at Jordan Commons will be retrofitted to house a state- of-the art IMAX theatre and is scheduled to open in Fall of this year. August 8, 2005: MediaMerge, Chicago MSI Ink Deal
Media systems integrator, MediaMerge, announced that it has entered into a multi-year agreement to provide technical support for the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry's IMAX Dome Theater in Chicago, IL. MediaMerge, in cooperation with the IMAX Corporation, will be responsible for providing preventative maintenance and technical support for the theater's worldclass sound and projection systems. August 4, 2005: IMAX Receives Favorable Court Rulings in Patent Lawsuit
IMAX Corporation (Nasdaq:IMAX; TSX:IMX) today reported a series of court orders issued by The Hon. Florence-Marie Cooper of the Federal District Court, Central District of California, in the ongoing patent litigation brought by IMAX and its co-plaintiff 3DMG, Ltd. against In-Three, Inc. On July 21 and July 29, 2005, Judge Cooper issued orders: (i) rejecting In-Three's motion to dismiss the proceedings, (ii) rejecting In-Three's motion to stay the proceedings for an examination by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, (iii) rejecting IMAX's motion for a preliminary injunction against In-Three and (iv) rejecting In-Three's motion for a preliminary injunction against IMAX. According to Judge Cooper, "IMAX has raised a substantial question concerning validity" of In-Three's intellectual property, and "a swift resolution of the issues is in the best interest of all involved." The case is now expected to proceed to trial quickly after completion of the parties' discovery. Click here to read the press release.
August 4, 2005: IMAX Reports Q2 2005 Financial Results
IMAX Corporation reported earnings for the second quarter 2005, its best June quarter for theatre systems signings since 1997. Earnings from operations increased 7% to $5.4 million for the second quarter of 2005. Highlights of their report include:
- Company reports net earnings of $0.03 per diluted share and ends the June quarter with $34 million in cash and cash equivalents, double the year-ago balance. Company confirms net earnings guidance for full-year 2005 of between $0.35 and $0.38 per share.
- Signings momentum continues as the Company signs 51 theatre systems in the trailing twelve month period, including thirteen theatre systems signed during the June quarter, more than triple the year-ago number.
- The Company's summer film slate heats up as IMAX DMR® versions of BATMAN BEGINS and CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY together gross nearly $22 million in seven weeks.
- Company's 2006 film slate begins to take shape with THE ANT BULLY: AN IMAX 3D EXPERIENCE confirmed as a day-and-date, Hollywood IMAX DMR release for summer 2006.

August 3, 2005: Sky High, Six Degrees Partner for Dinosaurs 3D
Quebec-based Sky High Entertainment announced a partnership with Six Degrees, Inc., a Chicago-based branded entertainment and customer experience design firm. Six Degrees will generate sponsorships, licensing deals and overall go to market support to promote the December 2006 release of DINOSAURS, Sky High Entertainment's latest large format creation. Animators who helped create Jurassic Park III, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, will take the Dinosaurs audience back to the time when the Argentinosaur, the largest land animal ever, and Giganotosaur, a predator larger than T-Rex, roamed the Earth. July 25, 2005: Strong Second Weekend for Charlie
IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures announced that CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE continued to record impressive results during its second weekend in IMAX® theatres, grossing approximately $1.46 million over the three-day period from Friday, July 22 to Sunday, July 24. This ranks as one of the best second weekends for an IMAX Hollywood simultaneous release, and follows on one of the highest grossing opening weeks for a digitally re- mastered title -- all while sharing IMAX screens with BATMAN BEGINS: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The IMAX Experience has now grossed an estimated cumulative total of $5.5 million over 10 days in 66 domestic IMAX theatres, for a per screen average of more than $79,000. July 21, 2005: Ant Bully To Be Released in IMAX 3D
IMAX Corporation, in association with Warner Bros. Pictures, Playtone Productions, its principals Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, and John A. Davis of DNA Productions, announced that THE ANT BULLY, an animated CGI film from the director of 2001's Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, will be released simultaneously in IMAX® 3D and conventional 2D format on August 4, 2006. The film will be digitally converted into IMAX 3D and feature proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The film is based on a book by John Nickle, which tells the tale of a young boy who floods an ant colony with his water-gun, and is magically shrunken down to insect size and sentenced to hard labor in the ruins. It will feature the voices of Nicolas Cage, Julia Roberts Meryl Streep, Paul Giamatti, Lily Tomlin, Cheri Oteri, Alan Cumming, Regina King, Ricardo Montalban and newcomer Zach Tyler Eisen. July 19, 2005: Charlie Shatters IMAX B.O. Records
CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE posted a strong debut due to its simultaneous IMAX Hollywood three-day opening. Breaking the record for IMAX's highest grossing summer weekend, Charlie opened in 65 North American IMAX® theaters grossing an estimated $2.21 million over the three-day period from Friday, July 15 to Sunday, July 17 with a per screen average of more than $34,000. The film also set single day box office records with the biggest opening day, Saturday and Sunday for an IMAX digitally re-mastered release. July 12, 2005: MFF Greenlights Alps
MacGillivray Freeman Films announced plans to produce THE ALPS: GIANTS OF NATURE, a large format adventure film set in Europe's greatest mountain range. Production is set to begin in fall 2005 with an anticipated release to the worldwide IMAX® theatre network in 2007. July 8, 2005: SVC Joins Sky High Entertainment on Dinosaurs
Quebec City's Studio Virtuel Concept (better known locally as SVC) has been tapped to create the visual effects for Sky High Entertainment's large format 3D film, DINOSAURS. Veteran animators, SVC has made significant contributions to Hollywood films such as Jurassic Park III, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. Dinosaurs will focus on the Argentinosaur (the largest land animal ever) and the Giganotosaur (a predator larger than T-Rex) and is directed by Marc Fafard. July 6, 2005: IMAX Signs Two Theater Deal in India
IMAX Corporation and Sathyam Cinemas, a top commercial exhibitor in India, announced an agreement to install two IMAX® MPX™ theater systems at Sathyam Cinemas' multiplexes in India. Sathyam Cinemas now has a total of four IMAX theaters scheduled to be installed in its multiplexes, with the first to open next year in Chennai, India and three more at locations to be announced.
