Wall St. Nation takes a look at IMAX stock following their 5-picture deal with Walt Disney Studios:

Right now if you try and buy shares of IMAX on Scottrade you have to call your broker to execute the trade, they want to know who’s buying. Makes you wonder.

The short float is only at 4.2%, every other stock is up today yet Imax and a few others won’t move, why?

What is going on with IMAX shares that the investing public doesn’t know about?

Is it just fear or is there something else going on?

Reuben H. Fleet Science Center to open newly renovated Space Theater

November 24, 2008 – 12:38 pm | Permalink

SAN DIEGO, Calif., Nov. 24, 2008 – After three and a half months of extensive renovations and technology upgrades, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center plans to reopen its Space Theater on Saturday, December 13, 2008, with three new IMAX films showing daily on the 76-foot tilted dome screen. Audiences will witness an astonishing underwater phenomenon in WILD OCEAN, discover the inspiration behind the canvas in VAN GOGH: Brush with Genius, and delight to a whimsical world of amazing animals in ANIMALOPOLIS.

Visitors to the newly-renovated Space Theater — which functions both as an IMAX Dome Theater and a planetarium — will enjoy dramatically improved sights, sounds and experiences. Large-format films will burst off the screen with unprecedented color and contrast, thanks to the installation of the world’s first NanoSeam™ Dome in an IMAX Theater. Manufactured by Spitz, Inc. and offering the smoothest, most uniform dome surface available, the new NanoSeam screen appears completely seamless under projection. Additionally, a new lens on the IMAX projector transmits more light and produces greater clarity across the entire image field.

From symphonic scores to dinosaur roars, improved audio quality inside the Space Theater will send chills down spines with the installation of a new 16,000-watt digital surround sound system. New seats and carpeting will enhance visitors’ comfort and enjoyment of IMAX film presentations inside the theater.

The Space Theater renovation is a major component of the Fleet Science Center’s $20 million capital campaign, “Creating Possibilities, Inspiring Tomorrow,” which is also providing invaluable financial support for expanded education programs and facilities, new hands-on science exhibitions and greater long-term financial security by strengthening the organization’s endowment.

The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center (”the Fleet”) is home to Southern California’s only IMAX® Dome Theater and 100+ hands-on science exhibits for all ages. Watch immersive giant-screen films in the newly-renovated Space Theater, featuring the world’s first NanoSeam Dome screen in an IMAX Theater. Experience seven galleries of fun, interactive exhibits, including major traveling exhibitions. A 23-passenger Motion Simulator Ride thrills visitors with journeys into exciting realms. Enjoy sandwiches, salads and healthy treats in Galileo’s Café. Find unique educational toys and games, books, IMAX DVDs and more in the North Star Science Store. Located at 1875 El Prado, two blocks south of the San Diego Zoo on Park Blvd, the Fleet Science Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the public understanding and enjoyment of science and technology. IMAX prez Greg Foster talks 2009 film slate

November 20, 2008 – 5:04 pm | Permalink

IMAX Chairman and President of Film Entertainment, Greg Foster, recently spoke with Monsters and Critics about IMAX’s upcoming film slate:

Will documentaries that are action tinged outweigh films for future distribution?

Foster: We are very committed to the original documentary business which is an essential part of IMAX’s history.

We select films – whether it be documentaries or Hollywood titles – that offer three things:

1) Does it take you somewhere where you dream about going. This could be to the depths of the ocean to encounter creatures that have never been captured on film, such as the case with Under the Sea 3D, or to space to walk alongside the astronauts as they repair the Hubble Space Telescope, which we will be doing next year when our cameras accompany the astronauts in the shuttle for Hubble 3D.

2) Visionary Filmmakers – We are working with the who’s who of filmmakers and next year’s slate is especially impressive: Christopher Nolan (Encore Presentation of The Dark Knight), Zack Snyder (Watchmen), Jeffrey Katzenberg (Monsters vs. Aliens), Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg (Transformers), David Heyman and David Yates (Harry Potter 6), James Cameron (Avatar), etc.

And, finally 3) Does the film’s scope take advantage of the IMAX presentation to really immerse the viewer in the story and setting.

Zion Canyon theater outfitted with 3D

November 20, 2008 – 12:19 pm | Permalink

The Zion Canyon Giant Screen Theatre in Springdale, Utah is now capable of showing 3D films. The St. George Spectrum reports:

Using 3-D technology that can only be described as cutting edge, the theater now boasts a projection system that “didn’t exist a year ago” and is “the first one of its kind,” said Marty Heaton, operations facilitator at the Zion Canyon Giant Screen Theatre.

On a screen that is roughly six stories high and 80 feet wide, lit by two state-of-the-art projectors, audiences can now take part in Brenden Fraser’s perilous “Journey to the Center of the Earth” or slip back to a time when dinosaurs roamed the planet in “Dinosaurs Alive,” both in 3-D, in addition to the theater’s other two-dimensional offerings.
