HOUSTON (Oct. 12, 2001) — The large format film Amazing Journeys received the prestigious Chris Statuette at the 49th annual Columbus International Film & Video Festival, also known as The Chris Awards. The statuette will be presented at the Awards Banquet on October 25, 2001, in Columbus, Ohio.
Produced by Graphic Films Corporation for Migrations Film Partners Ltd. in collaboration with the Houston Museum of Natural Science, Amazing Journeys follows five of the most unusual, lengthy, strenuous and amusing animal migrations anywhere. Undertaking heroic treks of survival across thousands of miles of the most spectacular places on Earth, these creatures exemplify extraordinary feats of stamina and perseverance in their efforts to ensure survival of their next generation.
The Chris Awards is one of the most prestigious documentary, entertainment and informational competitions in the country, and is the oldest of its kind in North America. Richard B. Long, president of the Film Council of Greater Columbus, announced that more than 700 entries, submitted by independent and corporate producers, agencies and distributors, participated in the 2001 competition. More than 30 countries were represented in 113 subject matter categories. Productions compete primarily on the basis of fulfilling their stated purpose and design for their target audience as well as their quality and importance. Only 10% of entries receive the coveted Chris Statuette and must receive 7 points on a rating scale of 1-7.
The Houston Museum of Natural Science stepped into the large format arena in 1994 and is recognized internationally for its leadership in the creation, distribution and marketing of such films. The museum currently distributes three films: Alaska: Spirit of the Wild; Africa: The Serengeti; and Amazing Journeys. The museum is producing two new films: Kilimanjaro, with David Breashears, and Australia: Land Beyond Time, which will premiere in March of 2002 and summer of 2002, respectively.
